The Blombos Ochre

In 2002, archaeologist Christopher Henshilwood and his team pulled a small piece of red ochre from the sandy layers of Blombos Cave on the southern coast of South Africa — and found something remarkable scratched into its surface. A deliberate cross-hatched geometric pattern, made up of intersecting lines forming a diamond-like grid, had been carefully engraved into the stone roughly 73,000 years ago. That makes it the oldest known example of abstract or symbolic marking by a human hand, predating all known art and writing by tens of thousands of years. Scholars still debate whether this pattern is purely decorative, some kind of symbolic notation, or something else entirely. But whatever its intended purpose, one thing is clear: an early human sat down and deliberately created a repeating visual pattern — imposing order and structure onto a raw surface. In a sense, that impulse to organize visual information is the same one that drives every chart, graph, and diagram we create today. The Blombos ochre may not be data visualization in the modern sense, but it is arguably the first step on a very long road toward it.
