Room I · Prehistory–1800s
In this room, the oldest marks we know of. Long before charts had names, people cut tallies into bone and traced grids into ochre — the first attempts to hold a quantity still long enough to look at it.

Room II · 1800s–1900s
In this room, the nineteenth century learns to argue with pictures. A cholera map closes a pump; a rose diagram reforms an army; a single flowing line carries four hundred thousand men into Russia and brings ten thousand home.

In February 2006, a 57-year-old Swedish professor of global health named Hans Rosling walked onto the TED stage and delivered what would become one of the most-watched TED talks of all time — 'The best stats you've ever seen.' Armed with animated bubble charts that plotted every country in the world across axes of income and life expectancy, Rosling narrated 200 years of global development in four breathless minutes, his pointer chasing China and India as they leapfrogged across the screen.
