The Lebombo Bone

Discovered in the 1970s in the Lebombo Mountains on the border between South Africa and Eswatini, the Lebombo Bone is a small baboon fibula with 29 deliberately carved tally notches running along its length. Dated to approximately 43,000 years ago, it is one of the oldest known mathematical artifacts in the world. The number 29 is tantalizing — it closely matches the length of a lunar cycle (29.5 days), which has led several researchers to propose that this bone may have served as a lunar calendar, used to track the passage of months by the phases of the moon. Others are more cautious, suggesting it could simply be a counting stick or tally for keeping track of quantities. Either way, the Lebombo Bone represents something profound: one of humanity's earliest known attempts to record quantity in a systematic, physical form. Counting is the most fundamental act underlying all data visualization — before you can chart anything, you have to count it first. This unassuming bone fragment, marked with notches by a hand 43,000 years ago, is a direct ancestor of every spreadsheet, every bar chart, and every dataset we work with today.
