On the night of November 6, 2012, millions of Americans refreshed the same webpage over and over, watching a thin needle swing back and forth on The New York Times' election forecast page. The 'election needle' — a real-time probabilistic gauge showing which presidential candidate was most likely to win as votes were counted — became an instant cultural phenomenon. Created by the NYT's graphics team including Mike Bostock (yes, the same person who built D3.js), the needle synthesized precinct-level returns, pre-election polling, and demographic models into a single, mesmerizing visual indicator that jittered and swung as new data arrived. It was brilliant, addictive, and controversial all at once. When the needle returned for the 2016 election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, it caused genuine anxiety — the Times later reported readers complaining of heart palpitations as the needle swung unexpectedly toward Trump early in the evening.
