In the late summer of 1854, a devastating cholera outbreak tore through London's Soho district, killing hundreds in a matter of days. While most physicians of the era still blamed the disease on 'miasma' — bad air — a local doctor named John Snow had a radical theory: cholera was spreading through contaminated water. To prove it, he did something brilliantly simple. He obtained a detailed street map of the neighborhood and marked each cholera death as a small black dot at the victim's address. When he stepped back and looked at the pattern, the answer was staring right at him — 616 deaths clustered densely around a single water source, the public pump on Broad Street. Snow presented his evidence to local authorities, who agreed to remove the pump handle, and the outbreak subsided shortly after. He published his findings in 'On the Mode of Communication of Cholera,' and the dot map became one of the most celebrated visualizations in the history of science. It didn't just make an argument — it literally saved lives. Snow's map is now considered a founding document of modern epidemiology and one of the most powerful demonstrations of how spatial data visualization can reveal patterns invisible in raw numbers alone.
